Travelling makes me happy, but lately it has been very difficult to not only find the funds to book a holiday abroad, but also to justify it. We are all struggling with the cost of living crisis and this winter is proving to be extremely cold – which means higher costs.
This is why I thought of writing an article about how we can save money on travel, in the new year. Because I believe that we all owe it to ourselves to feel the joy of travelling, each in our own way, be it by spending a week on a beach in Spain, being active in Madeira, or eating our way through Rome on a weekend.
I can’t imagine my life without travelling. It’s a way to recharge my positive energy but also a great way to trigger those happy endorphins. I always come back from a trip much more relaxed and a more efficient way of dealing with my daily tasks.
How to Save Money on Travel In the New Year:
Book in Advance
The key to finding a good holiday deal is to book in advance. Find out when the airlines are releasing their seasonal flights and be one of the first ones to check out the offers, simply subscribe to the airlines newsletter and stay informed. Sometimes you may be restricted by specific dates, especially if you have children and can only travel during the school holidays. These periods of time are notoriously very expensive. However, by following the airline’s schedules, you may be able to grab a fantastic deal even if your trip is during a school holiday.
Find a Discount Voucher
Many travel companies such as Jet2, Love Holidays, Easyjet, have different offers over the year. You can find all these discount codes gathered on Love Discount Voucher. The offers vary from getting money off holidays to discounts for summer trips.
For example, currently there is an Easyjet discount code that will offer you 35% off holidays to Turkey. This is a great option if you can’t decide on where to go on holiday next year – you see a new country whilst saving money at the same time.
Go On a Package Holiday
I went on my first ever package holiday last year, and loved it. I didn’t really know what to expect from it, especially that it was to Santorini, a destination that is very popular. I went on a packaged holiday to Santorini with Jet2, and the holiday included flights, the transfer, the accommodation, as well as breakfast every morning. The hotel was gorgeous, on the seafront, with its own private beach. It was located in the South of the island, a quiet area away from the crowds of Oia. I went on daily excursions to visit the island, but also spent a couple of days just relaxing by the pool and enjoying the local Greek cuisine at the nearby beach restaurants.
The advantage of booking a package holiday is that you get the flights, hotel and transfers included in one price. Usually this is a great option if you are travelling with your family, as most companies will offer discounts or free places for children.
Be Flexible with Dates
One of the best ways to save money on holidays next year is to be flexible with your dates. By starting your research at the beginning of the year, you will be able to find these great deals and plan your days off accordingly.
Just the other day I was helping a friend find flights to Rio, for August. He had a voucher and had to fly with British Airways, which had very expensive flights to this destination. However, because my friend was flexible with his dates, I managed to find him £500 flights cheaper, so he could use the voucher, still fly with British Airways, and pay the same price as on other airlines.
Know When the Sales Are
Airlines and travel companies have several yearly sales. If you haven’t booked a trip in advance, these are perfect times to snap an affordable flight or holiday. Most of the time, these sales are for travelling in the immediate period, so if you are looking for a last minute getaway, this can be a great option for you.
Subscribe to the airlines newsletters and ensure you don’t miss out!
Low cost airlines are often having snap sales, when you can buy flights starting at £5. Yes Ryanair, I am looking at you. Other airlines, such as Wizz Air, offer yearly passes with which you can get a discount for every flight you book, as well as for bringing luggage on board. These passes are very affordable, priced at 30 euros per year and promising a 10 euros discount for each flight you book. Because of this pass I often flew for less than £10 this year. In fact, I don’t think I paid more than £40 for a return flight to Europe since I bought the pass. What a gem!
