Recently I have been looking to buy a new vacuum cleaner for my house. I moved into my new home 2 years ago, and because of how many appliances I needed to get, I just bought a cheap vacuum. After only two months of using it, I started to regret not investing in a better one. I realised that the reviews on Amazon, where I bought it from, were most likely to be fake, as my new vacuum had barely any power, and using it on my living room carpet was impossible. To clean the brush, I had to unscrew the entire mechanism, which lead to the switch that lowered it, to break.
Having a cat that this year moulted like never before, I decided it’s time to take my old vacuum to the recycling centre and buy a new one. This is when Hoover contacted me and asked me if I wanted to review their brand new Hoover HF500 anti-twist with a pet function. The timing couldn’t have been better! And the pet function? Yes, please!
About the HF500 Anti-Twist Hoover

The HF500 anti-twist is the upgraded version of the powerful H-Free 500 model. It has better suction power, charges 58% faster and offers a 20% longer run time. It also features a unique anti-twist floorhead, which prevents hairs from wrapping around the roller. As someone with long hair, I know how hard it is to remove tangled hair from a brush!
The brush is the main feature of this hoover. When the carpet button is activated, the bristles of the brush rotate and pick up even the smallest dust particles. The brush has a very flexible neck, which makes it easy to clean underneath furniture and in tight spots. It can also be locked into place, which was very useful when I cleaned the stairs.
The HF500 anti-twist hoover is lightweight (2.2kg or 1.7kg in handheld mode) and can be easily carried around the house. I love that the vacuum adapts to my needs. I could use it as a tall vacuum, as well as a handheld cleaning device, for the couch. I even carried it to the car park and cleaned the interior of the car.
I also like the slick design of the HF500 anti-twist hoover. Firstly, the colour is so pretty! The buttons activate with a simple touch and the carpet brush has lights on it. The accessories can be changed by just pushing a button. They slide into place without any effort. On top there are lights for the battery, to let you know when it’s time to recharge.
I recently had a very busy three weeks, with two trips back-to-back and a concert in between. After the last trip, a fantastic five days in Gran Canaria, I returned home with Covid, so I had another week of rest, unable to do much. With a black cat who gets bored when I leave him alone, and also likes to make a mess when I’m away, (don’t worry, he does have a sitter) there was a lot to clean once I got better. I got to test all the functions of the HF500 anti-twist hoover in the process of getting my house spotless again.

The Rug Test
When I bought my fluffy living room rug I didn’t think about how hard it would be to clean. My previous vacuum cleaner didn’t even touch the surface. Every time I cleaned it I had to take it in the garden and shake it as much as I could. It’s quite heavy, so I never managed to clean it properly.
With the Hoover HF500 anti-twist, all I had to do was activate the carpet function, and the rotating brush cleaned every single inch of the carpet, picking up every single hair and depositing it directly to the bin rather than tangling on it. I don’t think my living room carpet has ever been so clean since I bought it. Not just that, but the HF500 hoover also refreshed the piles and made it look like new. I was pretty shocked at how much dirt and pet hair the vacuum managed to get out of the rug. I would never have believed that it could be so dirty!
The Skirting Boards Test
One of my least favourite house chores is cleaning the skirting boards. I suffer from back pain and bending for a long time to clean the skirting boards is very uncomfortable. The HF500 anti-twist hoover has a great long crevice tool that makes this job painless. I couldn’t believe that I cleaned all the skirting boards in the house in less than 5 minutes!
I also used this tool to clean between the appliances and the counters in the kitchen, where I can’t reach with my hand.
The Stairs Test
I could never vacuum the stairs as the cord from the old vacuum cleaner was not long enough. With the HF500 anti-twist, I cleaned them in no time.
The Pet Test
My lovely boy likes to sleep in the same place, on top of the couch. He also likes to cuddle and sleep inside the couch blanket at night. Cleaning the couch had always been a pain because the lint rollers barely removed any of the hair before the sticky tape got full. Consequently, I usually used an entire lint roller every time I cleaned the couch.
The mini power nozzle had no issues picking up every single hair from the couch.
Charging and Run Times

The Hoover HF500 anti-twist vacuum cleaner charges in 2.5 hours. The battery can easily be detached from the hoover and charged separately, by plugging the lead into the battery and the plug into the wall socket. The battery can also be attached whilst in the vacuum cleaner, but I found it much easier to take it out.
The vacuum has four working modes:
- Standard
- Carpet
- Turbo
- Auto
The run time of the hoover differs, depending on which setting you are using. The average time for standard mode is 40 minutes. The turbo mode will drain the battery quite quickly, but it will remove the dirt and dust so much faster. I found that the best mode to clean my fluffy carpet was a combination between carpet and turbo.
You can see the battery status on top of the hoover. When it’s red, it needs charging.
Cleaning
Cleaning the Hoover HF500 anti-twist couldn’t be easier. The dust cup comes out very easily and it has a button that releases the flap to empty the contents into the bin. The vacuum cleaner also has a filter and a sensor that lets you know when it needs cleaning. The filter can be washed with lukewarm water and left to dry for 24 hours before putting it back.
The brushbar inside the main tool is very easy to clean as well. The hoover comes with a small cleaning tool, so you don’t have to get your hands dirty when removing the dust from inside.
Storage
The HF500 anti-twist Hoover is compact, and it can be stored in small places or on the wall, using the mount that comes with it. It also has a small pouch that fits all the accessories, which can be stored at the bottom of a cupboard.

I moved to my new place recently also and just ended up buying target vacuum which isn’t that great. I’m going to look into this one you mentioned now. Thanks for sharing!
I do need a new vacuum because we are finally reuniting in our new place with our dog who is super fluffy!
This is interesting, I will get a dog soon and this would be a great thing to have. Thank you for sharing!
Love this very thorough review. I currently have a stack of vacuums (hoovers) that do not work. Or they work a little but really do just that- very little! Or worse work for short bursts – so love that you included charging and run time too!
I remember when my vacuum of 20 years finally packed in and I bought a cheaper brand to replace it. That was also a mistake! Having a great Hoover and having Pets is a match made in heaven!
Hoover is my favourite brand of vacuum cleaning. I actually have this one bet the 300 version. And I love it. I can’t believe how much dust is in the bin when I have finished!!
Ahh this sounds amazing! We have two dogs, and although they’re short fur, they still seem to do their fair share of moulting. This would be fab for us!
looks awesome! I have a fluffy dog and I know how important the pet feature is, it vacuum looks like a nice option for my apartment as well, will keep it in mind for due update
This sounds like an amazing vacuum cleaner! I’ve heard great things about Hoover, and will keep them in mind for the next upgrade.
