I’ve been thinking about December travel lately, and I’ve got to tell you, I’ve stumbled upon some pretty amazing places to visit in December in the States. You know how everyone always goes for the same old Christmas markets or ski resorts? Well, I decided to mix things up a bit this year.
I’ve been scouting all over, and I’ve found some real gems – places that are absolutely perfect for a December visit. Some of them are like stepping into a Christmas card, all snowy and festive. But here’s the twist: I’ve also found some spots where you can escape the cold altogether and soak up some sun.
What I love about these places is that they each offer something special for the holiday season. Whether you’re looking for that classic Christmas feel or wanting to try something completely different, I’ve got you covered.
Let me share with you some of the most amazing places to visit in the States this December. I think you’ll be surprised at what’s out there!
The Most Amazing Places to Visit in the States in December
Grapevine, Texas
One of the best places to head in December in the United States is Grapevine, Texas! This charming town is adorable year-round, but during the holiday season, it turns into a winter wonderland! Grapevine is the official Christmas Capital of Texas. We travel there every December and it does not disappoint!
Grapevine is located just barely outside of Dallas, Texas. You can fly into Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and be listening to holiday music on Main Street within minutes.
We love walking down historic Main Street with all its shops and restaurants decked out in their holiday best. Dozens of photo spots line the street from a gnome forest to a mistletoe booth. At night, the twinkling lights number in the thousands with scheduled light shows, drone displays, and fireworks.
Peace Plaza is our favourite spot to spend time in Grapevine during Christmas with its outdoor ice skating rink, gorgeous outdoor tree, and Harvest Hall food market with several tasty spots to choose from for a snack or meal.
Children will love heading to the train station to ride the Polar Express or picking up an Elf Passport and creating several holiday crafts and treats. Those interested in history won’t want to miss Nash Farm with its old-fashioned Christmas décor and antique display of life many years ago.
The Gaylord Texan is a popular spot to stay in Grapevine as well as visit for the day. We love their ice display which is made up of millions of pounds of ice and created by artists from around the world. The theme changes each year. The resort also offers sledding, light shows, gingerbread house decorating, holiday scavenger hunts, character breakfasts, and more.
Every square inch of Grapevine gets into the holiday spirit! Add it to your list of December travel ideas and you are sure to find yourself in one of the most festive towns that the US has to offer.
Leavenworth, Washington
My favourite winter getaway in the United States in the month of December is Leavenworth, a Bavarian village in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The town is decidedly magical in winter with snow-capped mountain peaks, rooftops loaded down with snow, and lots of sparkling Christmas lights! I love to Christmas shop in the “oh so Bavarian” downtown area.
Then it’s time for a break from shopping and sightseeing at the Gingerbread Factory. Warm up with a hot chocolate and a tasty gingerbread man, the perfect Christmas snack! Taking a horse drawn sleigh ride is one of my favourite Leavenworth memories. Sleigh bells ring as you’re pulled along snow laden fields by a majestic horse. The backdrop, snow dusted pine trees and snow capped mountains. The Leavenworth Reindeer Farm is my absolute favorite attraction in town.
I just can’t get enough of those sweet little reindeer. I recommend cozying up to a fire table at the German Beer Garden with a beer and pretzel. Sit back and relax as snowflakes float their way down onto the town. It’s like a real-life snow globe! Take a trip to Leavenworth in winter and you’ll be in the Christmas spirit in no time at all!
Note: Leavenworth isn’t really a “hidden gem.” It’s quite popular in fact. If you are averse to crowds, I recommend visiting mid-week when the tiny town is a bit less crowded.
Frankenmuth, Michigan
Known as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria,” Frankenmuth transforms into a Christmas wonderland each December. Every street, park, and storefront is decked out in twinkling lights and holiday decor.
Christmas shoppers travel great distances to peruse the festive shops along Frankenmuth’s main street and, of course, one cannot miss the world’s largest Christmas store. At Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, we took in the smell of cinnamon and pine while we navigated a maze through their 50,000 trims and gifts. It’s dazzling, really.
After shopping, we took the kids to Grandpa Tiny’s Farm. Here, Santa’s reindeer waited eagerly to meet their wide-eyed visitors.
We headed back into town in the evening to watch the Musical Tree. In the center of Frankenmuth, a Christmas tree is glittered with 23,000 lights synchronized to dance for seven minutes to holiday songs. You can also ride a horse-drawn carriage through the snowy streets.
Families with kids should visit Owosso, Michigan, which offers its own one-of-a-kind holiday excursion. It’s just a 55 minute drive from Frankenmuth. There, the Steam Railroading Institute brings the beloved tale of “The Polar Express” to life with a round trip journey to a North Pole themed village. The steam engine was the exact one that inspired the engine in the movie; its sounds came from the very Pere Marquette 1225 Steam Engine that transports guests to Michigan’s own North Pole.
Core memories were made watching our pyjama clad kids’ eyes sparkle in the magic of our train ride, complete with hot chocolate served by a singing and dancing magical car host. When we reached the “North Pole” we were greeted by the train’s hobo, met Santa and Mrs. Claus, built toys with elves at Santa’s workshop, and sang Christmas carols. Santa gave out the first gift of Christmas before the train whistled as we returned to our seats. On the train the kids found their own keepsake sleigh bells from Santa.
A trip to Frankenmuth plus a ride on The North Pole Express from Owosso makes for an unforgettable holiday experience for families.
Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville, North Carolina, is my go-to retreat for a day or weekend away.
As an annual pass holder, Asheville’s Biltmore Estate is a favorite stop that makes me feel as if I’ve been transported into a fairy tale. I also enjoy exploring Downtown Asheville’s eclectic River Arts District and Downtown’s unique shops and restaurants, which makes it a great place to search for gifts for hard-to-buy-for people.
Just a four-hour drive from my hometown of Raleigh, with easy access off Hwy 40, I go as often as possible. Biltmore Estate, downtown Asheville and the River Arts District are all a short driving distance from each other.
Biltmore Estate is a Gilded Age mansion with stunning architecture and vibrant gardens that offer something new every season, making it worth the trip year-round. But December is when Biltmore truly shines, transforming into a magical winter wonderland. People world-wide flock to Asheville in December just to see Biltmore Estate at Christmas.
The estate was the brainchild of George Vanderbilt. Construction of his 250-room residence, designed after a French Renaissance château, began in 1889. After six years, George finally opened his home to family and guests on Christmas Eve 1895.
Even today, Biltmore remains the largest privately owned home in the U.S.
Each year, the estate carries on traditions, such as putting up a decorated 35-foot tall Fraser fir in the Banquet Hall. That single tree requires a minimum of 50 staff members to set it up!
With over 67 decorated Christmas trees inside Biltmore House and an additional 45 across the estate, including Antler Hill Village and the Winery, the holiday decor is breathtaking, with over 45,000 lights and 282 candles inside.
It’s a dreamland! I love bundling up with a warm drink, walking around Antler Hill Village and the estate grounds at night, and taking in the atmosphere illuminated by over 850,000 outside lights.
Don’t miss the historic Conservatory’s festive decor, featuring 1,960 poinsettias and other seasonal plants. This tropical greenhouse is a toasty, welcoming place to warm up from the chilly mountain air.
The estate’s floral team crafts 238 fresh wreaths and 1,600 feet of garlands weekly, ensuring every corner is adorned with holiday cheer.
Tickets are available for daytime Christmas house tours, and Christmas Candlelight Evenings, or you can purchase a ticket only to visit the grounds, restaurants and enjoy Antler Hill Village. Parking is included with your admission.
I always feel like a personal guest of the Vanderbilt’s themselves when I stay at one of the estate properties, the luxurious Inn on Biltmore Estate or the more affordable Village Hotel.
Purchasing house tickets online as far in advance as possible is recommended. Only a limited number of people are allowed in the house during each time slot. They sell out quickly as the holiday season approaches.
Chicago, Illinois
Chicago, IL is an unforgettable place to visit in the USA in December! And perhaps not just for its cold temperatures, which the Midwest is known for this time of year. December in Chicago has less crowds than spring or summer.
Winter in the windy city is especially magical for its Christmas markets and ice skating. There are now two Christkindl Markets in Chicago: Wrigleyville and Daley Plaza. The Daley Plaza location is the original location and is conveniently located walking distance from Chicago Union Station. It’s also only a 5-minute walk from two more famous holiday activities in Chicago: The Walnut Room and Macy’s window display. Both are located at the Macy’s on State Street.
The Walnut Room is a place to have famous holiday brunch at the top floor of Macy’s. Each year, the restaurant transforms into a magical holiday atmosphere. Reservations are recommended in November as seats fill up fast.
4 days in Chicago is an ideal amount of time to begin scratching the surface of all the windy city offerings, though you can enjoy the December activities here on a long weekend trip.
The best way to get to Chicago is to fly into O’Hare or Midway international airports. It’s also easy to drive here from other Midwest states like Wisconsin or Indiana if you want to make it a road trip.
I highly recommend a warm winter jacket and water resistant boots this time of year. Weather can be unpredictable with freezing temperatures so plan accordingly! However, I love warming up in one of Chicago’s many amazing restaurants or holiday attractions while exploring!
New York City, New York
New York City is a great destination to visit in December, especially with all its holiday decorations that make the city sparkle at its finest every year. NYC transforms into a winter wonderland after Thanksgiving, all the way through the end of the year.
In Manhattan, Rockefeller Center is a must visit destination to see its iconic Christmas tree that shines bright over its skating rink, within view of the famous Saks Holiday Light Show that brings traffic to a standstill on Fifth Avenue. Flagship stores on Fifth Avenue are all dressed in their finest, with locations like Saks, Cartier, Tiffany & Co, Louis Vuitton and Bergdorf Goodman outdoing themselves year after year. While on 5th Avenue, luxury hotels such as the Plaza Hotel, Lotte Palace Hotel (which is a block away on Madison Avenue) and the Peninsula Hotel are all dressed up and well worth a visit. Please note that the Plaza Hotel may need reservations at one of their restaurants to enter.
The other iconic Christmas Trees in Manhattan that are worth visiting are at Bryant Park, the New York Public Library, Met Museum, 1221 Sixth Avenue and more. The tree at 1221 Sixth Avenue actually offers a great photo op with a doorway built under it, which makes for striking pictures. Radio City on Sixth Avenue is surrounded by amazing holiday decorations.
Bryant Park is a popular spot with its holiday market and a skating rink in the shadow of the Empire State Building. Union Square also has a holiday market that offers a lot of options for food, drink and gifts. Hudson Yards has become a must visit location for its holiday lights.
In Brooklyn, the Dyker Heights neighborhood offers extravagant holiday light displays, along with festive lights, inflatable characters, and holiday ornaments that adorn a number of the houses, and a must see destination for both New Yorkers and visitors alike.
Visiting New York in December is a great way to celebrate the holiday spirit, and indulge in the best of all the city has to offer, ranging from fabulous decorations, ice skating, amazing food and drink within a city dressed in its holiday best, year after year.
Duluth, Minnesota
Duluth, Minnesota, is one of the best places to visit in the Midwest in December. Located just a 2 hour drive north from Minneapolis, Duluth is known for being a renowned winter wonderland with all of the snow the area receives. But December is also an excellent time to visit because of Bentleyville, the enormous village of Christmas lights that delights visitors every year.
On average, Duluth gets 10 feet of snow each December alone, which is a lot even for the wintry state of Minnesota. If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, Duluth is almost guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit. Duluth is a naturalist’s delight with dozens of great hiking, snowshoeing, and nordic skiing trails within the city and the surrounding area. Plus it’s located on Lake Superior, so in my experience the lake effect keeps it from getting too cold while also providing gorgeous lakeside views.
Once you’ve walked or driven through the snow covered pines during the day, the sun will set and Duluth will transform into every child’s dream. Every Thursday-Sunday evening in December the Bentleyville Tour of Lights takes center stage. Visiting should be on everyone’s Ultimate Minnesota Bucket List. Over 5 million Christmas lights are strung together to create beautiful scenes to stroll through. Admission is free, and guests receive free hot cocoa, coffee, cookies, and popcorn. You can even huddle around the fire and roast marshmallows in the glow of all of the lights, which I highly recommend. And you know both Santa and Mrs. Claus are available to say hello!
Once you’re finished in Bentleyville, take a walk through downtown Duluth and check out all the buildings decked out in full holiday cheer. Every year, Duluth hosts a Christmas Lighting Challenge where homes and businesses go all out in their displays. Enjoy their efforts as you make your way around. And if you get too cold (which you might), fear not, Duluth is home to several bars, breweries, and cideries that you can always slip into to warm up in between your viewing.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Center City transforms into a winter wonderland each December, so Philadelphia is absolutely worth visiting during the holiday season. The city is unique for its mix of Christmas markets and villages, historical buildings, and charming neighbourhoods. I love to walk around South Philadelphia around Christmastime and make my way towards the twinkling lights and Christmas Market at Dilworth Park, adjacent to City Hall.
One of the most famous European-style holiday markets takes place every year in LOVE Park. There, you can find vendors selling handmade gifts, local treats, and other artisan crafts that make for perfect keepsakes or last minute gifts.
Don’t miss the festively decorated Italian Market and the surrounding neighborhoods of South Philadelphia. Be sure to stop by Isgo’s, one of the city’s most famous Italian bakeries, for Christmas cookies, hand-filled cannolis, and other special holiday treats. I’m partial to the ricotta-filled cannolis, and you can even buy a kit to make them yourself at home for a fun holiday activity.
For an extra special outing, drive out to Kennett Square and experience the incredible Christmas lights and festivities at Longwood Gardens. The gardens go all out for Christmas, with holiday music, tinsel, childhood toys, and festive water features. I tried to go during my visit, but it was completely sold out. I recommend that you buy your timed tickets well in advance.
Philadelphia is just a few hours from New York City. The city has its own airport, but it’s also accessible by car or train.
Helen, Georgia
If you are searching for a special place with unique charm to visit during the holidays, look no further. Helen, Georgia is a town that was created to mimic Bavarian villages in Germany; this festive city goes all out for Christmas every year. They decorate the exterior of the buildings, the shops and boutiques have tons of holiday trinkets, and Santa is available for the children to take pictures with and give him their wish list. It’s a great opportunity to shop for unique gifts and immerse yourself in the holiday spirit.
My family has been visiting Helen annually since I was a small child; we have kept the tradition alive by taking my niece and nephews now. One of my favorite reasons to visit around this time of year is to attend the annual Christmas Market (Christkindlmarkt) which occurs during the two weekends immediately after Thanksgiving. In addition to the year-round retail stores and restaurants, there are countless additional vendors lining the main downtown street. They have everything from handcrafted ornaments and door hangers to perfectly cooked authentic German food like pretzels and bratwurst. Plus, they have all the holiday sweet treats too!
As if that is not enough of a reason to visit this Alpine town, you can also watch the holiday parade, listen to live music, tour Helen in a horse-drawn carriage, or ride the only Alpine Mountain Coaster in Georgia. If you are still looking for more things to do while in the North Georgia Mountains, check out this list created by a local!
Miami, Florida
When I first had an opportunity to visit Miami, it was during the month of December. I was glad for the timing, as the warm December in Miami contrasts with the snowy Europe I have always known. With its sunshine and rain, December is the high tourist season for Miami.
This sunny city in Florida is one of the best places to visit in December with its happening events, sparkling Christmas decorations, and perfect holiday vibes. Check out this Miami itinerary to know the best ways to explore the city.
Water Lantern Festival in Miami is the perfect family-friendly event where the soft light of thousands of eco-friendly lanterns light up the water, making it a picturesque sight. It is usually held from mid-December to mid-January.
Santa’s Enchanted Forest is known as the largest holiday theme park in the world. Its dazzling lights, delicious food, and thrilling rides make Miami the best place to visit in December. The park is open from November to the first week of January. I suggest buying tickets in advance.
If you are looking for something more than traditional light displays, NightGarden at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is the place to be! This 23-acre garden is transformed into a fairyland with state-of-the-art holograms accompanied by music and motion-sensing technology.
Head to the South Beach to enjoy the Miami Beach Holiday Festival of Lights. The Miami Zoo also sparkles with fairy lights and the LED holiday tree.
Miami, the city of sunshine and beaches, is located in Florida and is served by Miami International Airport. You can catch a flight to Miami from almost all the major cities in the USA.
Phoenix, Arizona
Phoenix, Arizona, goes all out to ensure that visitors get into the spirit of the holiday season despite the lack of snow and cold weather. The weather typically ranges from the high 40’s to low 70’s Fahrenheit in December. It’s this mild and pleasant weather that draws us back each year to enjoy an active Phoenix vacation. We enjoy hiking in the mountains around Phoenix, whether it’s a challenging hike up Camelback or a shorter hike up Tempe’s A-Mountain. We always fit in activities on Tempe Town Lake, whether a bike ride around the lake or paddle boarding or rowing on the lake.
It’s not just the weather and outdoor activities in December that make a trip to Phoenix so special though. The city is also decked out for the season and packed with holiday and cultural events. One of our favorite activities is to have dinner outdoors at Gertrude’s Restaurant before exploring the adjacent Desert Botanical Gardens all lit up for Las Noches de las Luminarias. Another top pick is Mesa Temple’s Christmas Lights and International Nativity Display. While you’ll find countless light displays around Phoenix, Mesa’s is a classic, and one of the largest volunteer-driven light displays in the country. One more tradition we enjoy is attending a holiday concert by the Grammy-award winning Phoenix Boys Choir.
We’ve also enjoyed a few holiday traditions just outside of Phoenix, such as visiting Lights at the Farm at Vertuccio Farms and riding Grand Canyon Railways’ Polar Express to the North Pole to meet Santa and his reindeer. Phoenix in December is truly an incredible destination for those seeking warmer weather coupled with the festive spirit of the holidays.
Joshua Tree, California
The town of Joshua Tree is one of the best places to visit in December in the States, and I visit it almost every winter! Joshua Tree is located in Southern California, about a two hour drive from Los Angeles and a three hour drive from San Diego. It’s easy to get to with a car, and there’s so much to do.
One of the reasons this is such a great place to visit in December is the weather. While most of the United States is cold and snowy, daytime temperatures in Joshua Tree are usually in the 60s! It’s a great getaway if you’re dreaming of warmer weather. Christmas lights decorate the town, and there are several holiday events in the area.
There’s an annual holiday market at the 29 Palms Art Gallery, featuring handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and more. Just a short drive away, in Indio, there’s a display called the Fantasy of Lights, with over a mile of light displays!
If you do want to experience a little bit of winter wonderland, drive to nearby Palm Springs for the Aerial Tramways Santas Workshop event. You’ll take the tramway up over 8,000 feet, to the top of Mount Jacinto, where you’ll find snow, holiday decorations, and Santa’s Workshop, with activities crafts, and games.
December is also a great time to visit Joshua Tree National Park, and to go hiking, camp under the stars, and enjoy the sunny weather. Just outside the park, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens hosts an annual Wild Lights display, with Christmas Lights decorating the desert backdrop, standing out against the cacti and mountain views.
Hawaii
Hawaii is one of the best places to visit in December for so many reasons! Located in the United States in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii is an easily accessible paradise with direct flights from most major cities on the West Coast like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle.
While much of the country and many parts of the world are in a frozen tundra, Hawaii offers a much needed warm escape with its glorious sunny weather and breathtaking beaches! With Hawaii December temperatures hovering between mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, it’s the perfect winter trip for outdoor lovers.
One of my personal favourite things to do in Hawaii in December is heading to the best sunrise spots in Hawaii, including Lanikai beach and Diamond Head National Park on Oahu, Hawaii. Watching the first light of day cast a golden hue over the horizon is so peaceful and an awe inspiring way to start your day. There’s something so magical about meditating at sunrise on a secluded beach that I’d trade snow boots for some flip flops to head to a Hawaii beach any day!
For those who want to give back during the holiday season and wondering is it ethical to travel to Hawaii right now. I highly recommend participating in activities that support the local environment and communities during your Hawaii vacation, such as beach clean-ups, holiday gift drives, and learning about marine conservation.
If you’re missing traditional festive events, there are tons of Christmas celebrations at Ala Moana Mall in Oahu, where you can enjoy holiday decorations, performances, and unique Hawaiian Christmas traditions. Visiting Hawaii in December is worth it not just for the sunny weather, but for Hawaii’s unique blend of outdoor adventures, cultural richness, and local December traditions.
St. Croix, US Virgin Islands
St. Croix, the lesser known of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), is a fantastic destination to visit in December, offering the perfect combination of tropical weather, vibrant local culture, and seasonal festivities.
Firstly, St. Croix’s idealistic weather is the perfect destination for escaping those early winter blues. With temperatures in the high-70s to mid-80sF (20sC), the island provides a delightful escape from the cold and snow found in many parts of the continental U.S.
Unlike many tropical destinations, St. Croix is unique in that all of the island’s beaches are accessible to the public which makes for an endless selection of places to bask in the sun or jump in for a dive. St. Croix is home to some of the world’s best snorkeling, including Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge.
The island boasts a variety of festivals in December that highlight the island’s rich cultural heritage, featuring parades, music, dancing, and delicious local cuisine, in celebration of the month long Crucian Carnival. As you make your way around the island, the festive vibes can be felt in every corner.
Festivities include The Children’s Parade, Adult Parade, and Christmas Boat Parade to name a few, as well as The Festival Village, another key attraction, offering a lively atmosphere with food vendors, live entertainment, and games. And if you’re fond of tropical cocktails, you won’t want to miss the annual Coquito Festival.
Moreover, the island’s European influenced historical sites and incredible natural beauty add to its allure. Visitors can explore the colonial architecture of the main towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted, or hike through the scenic landscapes offered by trails found around the island.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan, Puerto Rico is a top beach destination for any travellers and it is a wonderful place to visit in December. It’s a tropical island in the Caribbean Sea, where you can enjoy the sun, the sea, and the culture. The weather is warm and sunny in December.
San Juan, Puerto Rico is a lively and colourful city located right on the water. It offers a plethora of exciting experiences, and is an ideal location for a December break. It is considered safe city with a concentration of beaches, seaside parks, historical sights, hotels, restaurants, and nightlife.
Old San Juan showcases lovely buildings painted in lively shades of pink, yellow, green, and blue, reflecting the city’s vibrant spirit. The city of Old San Juan is walkable. Other popular areas like Condado Beach, Miramar, and Loiza are just a short and inexpensive Uber away.
If you are a nature lover, you will love the mountains, forests, waterfalls, caves, coral reefs, and beaches nearby San Juan. Some of the most famous spots are El Yunque Rainforest, the Bioluminescent Bay, and the Camuy River Cave Park. There are hosted day tours that can take solo travellers to see these areas.
As it’s part of the United States, Puerto Rico is a very easy beach destination for American citizens and residents to travel to. No passport or customs lines required from US destinations! Additionally, as it is considered a large Caribbean hub, there are nonstop flights from all over the world. It’s the easiest Caribbean destination for many.
San Juan, Puerto Rico is also a family friendly destination, so it has many holiday and Christmas-time celebrations focused for visitors, as well as residents alike. You can expect Christmas trees and lights all over the beautiful Old San Juan buildings.
I recommend staying in Condado Beach. There are many resort-style hotels, as well as apartment rental properties, there. It is also a quick 10-minute ride into Old San Juan.
San Diego, California
December in San Diego is a perfect time to spend time outside and go for some scenic hikes in places like Anza Borrego Desert State Park, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve or take a hike to the famed potato chip rock where you can snap a photo for the ‘gram.
You can also join a guided tour from San Diego to Tijuana, the largest city in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula where you can learn about the country’s culture and enjoy delicious tacos.
While you will need a car to enjoy these places, there’s also plenty to do in downtown San Diego including Balboa Park, a historic urban park where you can visit museums, spot hidden gems and admire the spectacular architecture.
San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter is a popular place to go out and have fun on a weekend. Coronado Beach is a popular spot for watching the sunset and enjoying a picnic if you need a break from the city.
You can fly into San Diego International Airport (SAN) or drive there from Los Angeles and other destinations across the Southwest.
San Diego has some public transportation options, but it’s better to rent a car for your trip, especially if you want to visit places like potato chip rock or Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Park.
