The Most Famous Attractions in Europe

There are many great places to see in Europe. In this article, we have chosen the most famous that you must see on your first trip to the continent.

The Colosseum, Italy

Without a doubt, the Colosseum is the most famous landmark in Europe. Located in the heart of Rome, the Colosseum has a fascinating history that offers a glimpse into the life of the Romans, back 2,000 years ago. It’s hard to imagine that the Colosseum has only been excavated in the early 19th century.

Built between 70 and 80AD under the Flavian emperors Titus and Domitian, the Colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and, to date, the largest standing amphitheatre in the world today. When you visit Rome you must buy a ticket to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum as well, especially if you are passionate about the Roman Empire.

The Colosseum was not just an arena for gladiator fights, but also a place for different celebrations, animal hunts, as well as re-enactments of famous battles.

Rome is not famous just for the Colosseum but also for the fact that it is an open space museum. No matter where you go, or which corner you pass by, there is something to see. Also, don’t forget to try some of that delicious Roman food such as pasta cacio e pepe, carbonara, or amatriciana, porchetta, or coda alla vaccinara at one of the traditional restaurants in Rome.

The Acropolis of Athens, Greece

One of the most iconic ancient sites in Europe is the Acropolis of Athens which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance and magnificent architectural beauty.

The most famous temple in the Acropolis of Athens is the Parthenon, built for Goddess Athena, the patron god of ancient Athens. It is highly recommended to read the Legends of Olympus before you visit the Acropolis, to better understand the Greek mythology and the role of each temple.

Stonehenge, England

If you are into mysterious monuments, you must travel to England and visit Stonehenge. This prehistoric monument close to Salisbury has unknown origins, which makes it a very peculiar landmark.

There are many theories on how Stonehenge came about, some more credible than others. The historians believe that Stonehenge was built by druids, whilst conspiracy theorists give credit to the aliens.

A visit to Stonehenge can be combined with a tour of Salisbury, which is a lovely town with cute coffee shops and pretty timber architecture. Salisbury is famous for its gothic cathedral which has the tallest spire in the UK, as well as the oldest working clock in the world.

Eiffel Tower, France

Situated within the City of Love, the Eiffel Tower was constructed in 1889 and is an iconic landmark of France. Originally the tallest structure in the world at the time it was built, there are now two levels open to the public that offer a view of the city.

One of the most unique experiences that you can have here is enjoying dinner at the restaurant at the second level of the Eiffel Tower. It is worth splashing for, especially if you are travelling with your loved one and you are looking for a romantic thing to do in Paris.

The Eiffel Tower is considered one of the most beautiful landmarks in Europe, particularly in the evening, when it is illuminated.

The Highlands, Scotland

If you are looking for a holiday in an area of outstanding beauty, consider travelling to Scotland. The Highlands of Scotland offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, in the middle of spectacular nature.

Don’t forget to add at least a visit to one Lock to your Scotland Bucket List. Loch Lomond, Loch Fyne and Lock Ness and some of the most famous. Who knows, you might even spot Nessie, the famous resident monster of Loch Ness.

Imagine staying in a pretty cottage repurposed as a B&B, in a small village, with a local pub where you can try the best of Scottish cuisine: haggis, needs and tatties, cullen skink, scotch pies and, of course, deep-fried Mars bars.

Dutch tulips are famous all over the world. A great day trip from Amsterdam is to Keukenhof Gardens, where you can walk between fields and fields of colourful tulips. The Keukenhof Gardens are open only two months a year, so you must prepare your trip here ahead of time.

The gardens feature 79 acres of tulip plantations, as well as different artworks using these delicate flowers. Each year the gardens have a different theme, making sure that visitors will return over and over.

When to Travel to Europe

Travelling in Europe tends to be the best outside of the high season, which is summer. Make sure to check the holiday times before you plan your trip. The most famous landmarks are also the most visited places in Europe, and in summer, it can be hard to get a ticket or enjoy them without the crowds. Consider travelling to Europe in autumn or spring rather than in summer.

Nice ideas! I’d also add Barcelona in Spain along with some Scandinavian countries, Bergen Norway or Stockholm Sweden. Europe is very diverse and interesting to explore. Definitely can’t mix it all up. But if you ask me what country is the best to start to explore and get a glimpse of Europe, I’d say Italy. There is much diversity and history there. Unbeatable
