The Worst Areas for Pickpockets in Europe

Planning a European getaway? While you’re busy daydreaming about croissants in Paris or gelato in Rome, there’s one less glamorous aspect of travel you shouldn’t overlook: the risk of pickpocketing. A recent study by travel insurance comparison experts Quotezone.co.uk has revealed the European destinations where tourists are most likely to fall victim to light-fingered thieves. Let’s take a closer look at some of the hotspots you might want to keep an extra eye on your belongings.

Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy

Topping the list is Italy, with a whopping 478 pickpocketing mentions per million visitors. The Eternal City’s iconic Trevi Fountain is a particular hotspot. While you’re tossing coins and making wishes, someone else might be wishing for the contents of your wallet. Remember, crowds and distractions are a pickpocket’s best friends.

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

Coming in second is France, with 251 pickpocketing mentions per million visitors. The Eiffel Tower, unsurprisingly, is a prime target. As you’re craning your neck to admire the Iron Lady, keep your hands on your belongings. Those long queues and bustling crowds provide perfect cover for skilled thieves.

Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain

Spain ranks third on the pickpocketing index, with Las Ramblas in Barcelona being the worst of the five tourist spots analyzed. This vibrant pedestrian street is a hive of activity, making it easy for pickpockets to blend in and strike when you least expect it.

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, Germany

Germany’s iconic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is another area where tourists should remain vigilant. While not as high on the list as some other destinations, it’s still a popular spot for pickpockets due to the high volume of distracted tourists.

Red Light District, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam’s infamous Red Light District is not just known for its adult entertainment. It’s also a hotbed for pickpockets. The narrow streets, neon lights, and often inebriated tourists create an ideal environment for theft.

Alfama, Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, Alfama, with its narrow winding streets and charming atmosphere, is unfortunately also attractive to pickpockets. As you navigate the steep hills and admire the views, keep your valuables close.

Acropolis Museum, Athens, Greece

Even cultural institutions aren’t immune. The area around the Acropolis Museum in Athens has seen its fair share of pickpocketing incidents. As you’re absorbed in ancient Greek history, modern-day thieves might be eyeing your possessions.

Rynek Glowny Central Square, Krakow, Poland

Poland’s picturesque Krakow, particularly the bustling Rynek Glowny Central Square, rounds out our list. This medieval market square attracts tourists and pickpockets alike.

Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, emphasizes that theft can happen anywhere, but tourist hotspots are particularly convenient for criminals. “Iconic attractions like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Trevi Fountain in Rome are particularly popular with pickpockets as they can move more inconspicuously amongst larger crowds,” Wilson notes.

So, how can you protect yourself? Wilson offers several tips:

  1. Remain vigilant at all times.
  2. Leave valuables, especially expensive jewelry, in your hotel safe.
  3. Use a secure cross-body bag with zips or a money belt to keep phones and wallets safe.
  4. Never leave personal belongings unattended.
  5. If you do fall victim to theft, always get a police report to support your insurance claim.

Speaking of insurance, Wilson reminds travelers to double-check their policies before heading to these high-risk destinations. “Most travel insurance policies cover important documentation such as passports but rarely cover stolen cash and phones,” he warns. Consider adding extras like gadget travel insurance if needed.

It’s worth noting that not all popular destinations are pickpocketing hotspots. The study found that tourists enjoying a pint at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin can feel relatively secure, with Ireland ranking tenth on the list with only 7 pickpocketing mentions per million visitors.

While these statistics might seem alarming, they shouldn’t deter you from exploring Europe’s beautiful cities. By staying aware of your surroundings and taking basic precautions, you can significantly reduce your risk of becoming a victim. After all, the joy of travel lies in experiencing new cultures and creating lasting memories – not in worrying about your belongings.

Remember, the best souvenirs are the ones you choose to bring home, not the ones chosen for you by a pickpocket. Stay safe, stay alert, and most importantly, enjoy your European adventure!
