As the capital of Spain, Madrid is a popular destination for travellers. However, with so much going on, it’s easy for you to miss out on some of the best landmarks around. One of the reasons there are so many things to see is simply the historical heritage of this city. As the centre point of a large country, the capital has unique buildings and monuments of interest to people from around the world.
To help you out, I’ve compiled a list of the top five unmissable landmarks in Madrid. Make sure you factor in time to visit all of them!
Palacio Real (Royal Palace)
Also known as the Palacio de Oriente, this is one of the most famous of Madrid’s landmarks. It’s found in El Madrid de los Austrias, which is also the area containing most of Madrid’s unique history. In fact, this entire area is packed with beautiful architecture as well as many green spaces and traditional restaurants.
The Royal Palace is the official residence of the current Spanish royal family, but generally is used for receptions and state ceremonies. Even though the king actually resides elsewhere, it’s still the largest functioning royal palace in Europe. With 3000 rooms, each one decorated with furniture, paintings and statues, it’s an impressive free museum to visit. Additionally, arrive between 11 am and 2 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays to watch the changing of the guard.
Finally, the Royal Palace is also home to the Campo del Moro – the palace gardens. Situated behind the palace, they’re free to the public and open at the same times as the palace.
Almudena Cathedral
In the same area as the Royal Palace is another hugely popular landmark, the Santa Maria la Real de La Almudena. Found in the historic centre, it’s located next to the palace. It’s the most important Catholic church in Madrid as it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid. It was consecrated by John Paul II in 1993. What makes this stand out is the mix of architectural styles combining a neoclassical exterior with a neogothic interior. Right behind the cathedral are the Arab Walls of Madrid, which were built in the 9th Century when Muslims ruled the Iberian peninsula.
Santiago Bernabéu Football Stadium
For those looking for something different from all the historical monuments, then sports are another cultural option in this city. Football is huge in Spain, and it’s to be expected that there are football stadiums to meet that need. In Madrid, one of the most popular tourist sites is the Santiago Bernabéu football stadium, home to the acclaimed team, Real Madrid.

Puerta del Sol
A popular square in Madrid, it’s an oft-used meeting point for locals as well as tourists. This is due to its central location and because the metro station is one of the main transport hubs in the city. As such, even if you don’t plan it, you’re likely going to end up here anyway.
The square itself is a semi-circle and is the focal point for many commercial areas and popular streets. Leading off the square you can find Mayor, Preciados and Arenal streets, all with shops and cafes galore.
Madrid Rio
Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the main city might be on your mind. If it is, then there’s a great option for you in the form of Madrid Rio. Not only is it a great option for adults, but it’s perfect for kids too. This is an urban park built alongside the Manzanares River and is a leisure spot enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. It’s got large green spaces for a gentle stroll, but also numerous playgrounds for children to enjoy. Impressively, these play areas are all made from sustainable materials.
In addition to all this, Madrid Rio is also a place to enjoy cultural activities as well. These are held at the Matadero Madrid.
